OSA can affect much more than snoring.

Your sleep affects your heart, brain, metabolism and daytime function.

Untreated sleep apnea repeatedly interrupts sleep and lowers blood oxygen, reducing restorative deep and REM sleep.

Understanding obstructive sleep apnea

When the airway closes during sleep, the whole body feels it.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when breathing repeatedly stops or becomes shallow during sleep. These events fragment restorative sleep and can cause repeated drops in oxygen.

Mild OSA5–14breathing events/hour
Moderate OSA15–29breathing events/hour
Severe OSA30+breathing events/hour

Effective treatment is treatment you can use

Finding the right therapy means balancing efficacy, adherence and real-world effectiveness.

CPAP can be extremely effective when worn consistently. Oral appliance therapy can provide a comfortable, travel-friendly alternative for appropriate patients, and is often easier for patients to use nightly.

AASM / AADSM guidance

Oral appliance therapy is an established option for OSA.

For mild to moderate OSA, a custom titratable oral appliance can be considered as a first-line treatment option for appropriate patients. For severe OSA, CPAP remains the gold-standard/first-line therapy; oral appliance therapy may be considered when CPAP cannot be tolerated or when an alternate therapy is selected with the sleep physician.

Frequently asked questions

What patients usually want to know.

Is snoring the same as sleep apnea?

No. Snoring can result from partial airway narrowing, while obstructive sleep apnea involves repeated episodes of marked reduction or cessation of airflow during sleep. A sleep study is needed to diagnose OSA.

Can a dentist diagnose sleep apnea?

Dentists can screen for OSA risk and recognize oral/anatomic signs, but medical diagnosis is made by a qualified medical provider based on appropriate sleep testing.

Will an oral appliance work for everyone?

No single treatment works for every patient. Effectiveness depends on OSA severity, anatomy, weight, sleep position, device design, titration and adherence. Follow-up sleep testing is important.

What if I have severe OSA and cannot use CPAP?

CPAP remains the gold-standard treatment for severe OSA. If it cannot be tolerated, your sleep physician may consider alternatives such as oral appliance therapy, combination therapy, surgery or other options based on your individual case.
